Culture Club - how to create the right employee culture in your store

Workplace Culture. The term—and thought process— the process behind creating an environment that attracts and retains a talented and dedicated workforce is rapidly evolving. To stay ahead of the game in today’s competitive job market, especially in the millennial and Gen Z market, takes more than attractive benefits to remain relevant. It takes creative planning and an employee-centric focus to drive a positive workplace culture. 

This panel discussion will focus on three areas: building team loyalty, tactics for easing stress, and best practices for delivering value to your employees. Join us as we discuss creating an environment that promotes collaboration, career advancement, technology and tools, financial stability, training, and creating a work/life blend. 

Denise Richards, CGA, Underwood Jewelers; John Carter, CGA, Jack Lewis Jewelers; Sarah Person, CG, Exclusively Diamonds; and Katherine Bodoh, RJ, American Gem Society and AGS Laboratories.

Katherine Bodoh is the CEO of the American Gem Society (AGS) and AGS Laboratories, where she manages the day-to-day operations and strategic decisions of both organizations. Prior to that, Katherine served as the Deputy Executive Director of the American Gem Society. A passionate volunteer, she has served on the Women’s Jewelry Association Scholarship Fund Board of Trustees, and the Board of Directors for the Wisconsin Jewelers Association. Katherine currently serves on the Jewelers for Children Fundraising Committee and Board of Directors, Jewelers Circular Keystone Advisory Council, Jewelers Vigilance Committee Board of Directors, and Jewelers of America Ethical Initiatives Committee. She is also involved in the Jewelers Leadership Forum and serves as the Secretary for the U.S. Jewelry Council. She is also a member of the 24K Club of New York, as well as the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE). 

Denise Richards, CGA, is a member of the management team of Underwood Jewelers in Jacksonville, FL.  In her position at Underwood’s, in addition to her primary responsibilities of managing the computer systems of the company, Denise is in charge of inventory control, and has developed Underwood’s entire Social Networking experience.  Denise interacts with customers on a daily basis using Facebook, Instagram and our website which she designed.  Denise’s interactive Facebook posts have been used in industry trade journals and seminars as examples of how a retail jeweler can implement a social networking plan to reach a younger diamond buying demographic. 

John Carter, CGA, is the owner and CEO of Jack Lewis Jewelers in Bloomington, IL. Carter began working at Jack Lewis as a junior in High School and worked his way through college there. Upon his graduation from Illinois State University in 1998 with a Bachelors in Marketing, he went to work for the Maurice Lacroix watch company as the Upper Midwest Regional Sales Manager.  After a five-year education on the road, John returned to Jack Lewis Jewelers in 2002 where he began his correspondence education through GIA.  After two years he received his Graduate Gemologist (GG) degree, and furthered his credentials through the American Gem Society (AGS) with his Registered Jeweler (RJ), Certified Gemologist (CG), and finally his Certified Gemologist Appraiser (CGA) in 2007. In 2011 he bought Jack Lewis Jewelers from his former business partner. He currently serves as the President of the AGS board of Directors. 

Sarah Person is the President and Owner of Exclusively Diamonds in Mankato, MN.  Exclusively Diamonds was incorporated in 1981 and has grown to be Southern Minnesota’s largest fine jeweler. The store’s mission is to be the jeweler of choice by building a legacy of integrity and trusted pricing in fine quality jewelry and uncompromising service. They strive for all of their customers to have a memorable, rewarding and legendary experience every time they visit the store. Their purpose is to serve their customers, the local and global community, and God.
